Welcome to Reception Elm Class. On this page you will find information about how we organise teaching and learning in our reception class at Stapleford and see highlights, through photos and updates of what we have been doing.
Class organisation in Reception
We have one Reception class at Stapleford with a maximum of 30 children the class. We currently have a few places available so if you would like a place or would like to visit the school please contact the school office to arrange your visit, we would love to meet you.

EYFS
In the Early Years Foundation Stage children learn through practical first hand learning experiences, meaningful interactions with others, physical activity and play. The Early Years curriculum emphasises three Prime Areas of learning:
- Personal, social and emotional
- Communication and Language
- Physical
The curriculum breaks down into four further areas of learning - The Specific Areas:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design
Teaching in reception is organised through a range of approaches involving whole class, small group, guided focused groups and child initiated (Busy Learning).
- Planned focused activities are where adults work with a small group of children at a time. Teachers will differentiate the activity to meet the needs of every child participating.
- Small group teaching of phonics.
- Whole class teaching for short periods of time such as shared storytime, direct teaching (for example of maths), songs and rhymes, discussions and sharing work.
- Child initiated - Busy Learning is where children access the challenges and provision in the class room.
